Personal Goals

There are many ways to learn English and everyone is different. When you find a method you like, it can be the most effective way to make real progress. I am here to help you develop your own method of learning in a relaxed atmosphere. Here are some ideas that have worked well with my students. You might want to try something similar or something completely different:

DANIEL: Above all, I want to improve my vocabulary and fluency in speaking. In the first few classes we were talking about life in general for the whole hour. Then, as I am an accountant, Suzy suggested that we read a famous book about money in a relaxed way. As the book is American, we discussed the differences between the financial systems in the US and Europe.

A typical lesson might consist of 20 minutes of talking about the week, then 20 minutes of talking about the book and then Suzy would ask me a list of fun questions to practise a grammar point, for example, all the questions in the conditional, or all the questions about the future.

I am having fun and I’m learning the grammar without knowing it.

MAITE: I recently went on a trip to New York and I wanted to prepare for it so that I could communicate well at all times. I love the city and I was really looking forward to going back again.

I like to study English when I have time so I looked on YouTube and other websites to find information about the trip in English. For example, I wanted to visit the Amish village of Lancaster in upstate New York. I prepared some notes on the subject and when I was with Suzy, I explained to her what I had learned. We corrected my notes together and then we discussed their traditions. In the meantime, Suzy wrote down the phrases I liked so that I could use them. On other days, we went over dialogues that I found online about the airport (especially security), the hotel and shops.

MARCOS: At the moment I am reading “The Daily Stoics” in English. In the book there is a short paragraph written by a philosopher for each day of the year. Then there is a short commentary by the author. I take the book with me when I meet Suzy. I read the text of the philosopher and the author out loud and she corrects my pronunciation. Then I translate it as best I can and she helps me with the parts I don’t fully understand.

We talk about many topics applying the ideas we have read. If one day we don’t talk about the book, it doesn’t matter.

As you can see from the examples, we can have conversations about your weekly experiences, trips to different countries, family and friends, plans, favourite books, videos, podcasts or any ideas that spark your interest.

If you want to go deeper into specific materials, such as articles or book excerpts, we can do that too.

It’s all about finding the right combination of conversation and focused study to suit your personality, learning style and language goals. You will find that when you enjoy what you do, learning becomes easier.
